Madison Clements was a student at Winslow High. Alongside Sophia Hess and Emma Barnes, Madison was a member of a trio of bullies that had favored targeting Taylor Hebert.

Personality

Madison's bullying tended to be more juvenile than Sophia and Emma's. She was one of the few students to be friends with Sophia.[1] Taylor felt an ugly, sour feeling when she saw her looking at her. She helped Sophia pour juice on Taylor, laughing "like it was the funniest thing in the world".[2] Madison was popular because boys liked her and she had friends. Taylor speculated that guys liked Madison because she was appealing without being intimidating.[3]

Unlike Emma and Sophia, Madison would come to feel remorse for her actions after learning that Taylor was Skitter, and aspired to become a better person. Post-Gold Morning, and during her queries into Taylor's fate, Madison admits in an online conversation with Victoria Dallon that she felt responsible for Taylor's descent into villainy and for the people Taylor would go on to hurt. Though Victoria chastises Madison for her actions, she stresses to her that she was only partially responsible, reasoning that Taylor very likely had plenty of bearing over her own decisions.

Appearance

Taylor described Madison as 'adorable', cute, or petite — a late bloomer. She "played up" her cute appearance with her clothing and and a "cutesy" attitude. She had shoulder length brown hair, which she typically wore sky-blue pins in to accent it.[4]

She was brazen enough to wear light clothing even in cold weather.[5]

History

Background

Madison's parents were young-looking, with her mother being similarly petite.[6]

Madison helped to bully Taylor as a member of the Trio, and helped set up the Locker Incident.[1][7]

At some point, she encountered Point_Me_@_The_Sky and a number of other heroes at a photoshoot, alongside Emma and Sophia. The three of them made fun of a disabled girl who was at the photoshoot, alienating most of the heroes.[8]

Story Start

When Taylor and the Trio were called in to discuss punishment for their behavior, Madison was accompanied by her parents. She was the only one of the three who looked upset.[9]

Post-Leviathan

Madison and her family left Brockton Bay for a time after the city was devastated by the Endbringer attack.[10]

Post-Slaughterhouse Nine

Madison appeared in Taylor's visions as she was trapped by Echidna.[11]

Post-Echidna

When Taylor was publicly revealed as Skitter, Madison was one of many students interviewed.[12][Needs better source] Madison would later imply that she faced stigma for her bullying,[Needs source] as while her name was kept out of the media "word still got out."[13]

At some point, Jessica Yamada talked to her in an attempt to get a better grasp on Skitter's personality.[14] Madison would ultimately come to feel regret for her actions, and would try to research Taylor.[15]

Glow-worm

Madison contacts Point_Me_@_The_Sky anonymously on Parahumans Online, looking for information about Taylor Hebert. She has already done a great deal of research, but turned up limited information. She is apparently planning to become a teacher.[16] She asks Point_Me_@_The_Sky for advice on how to become a better person.

  2. The three of them were laughing like it was the funniest thing in the world, but the sounds of their amusement barely registered with me. - Excerpt from Gestation 1.1
  3. The clothes I wore didn’t show skin, and I didn’t deck myself out in bright colors like a bird showing off its plumage.

Guys liked her, I think, because she was appealing without being intimidating.

If they only knew. - Excerpt from Gestation 1.1
  4. Madison was talking with her friends.  She was popular, but not gorgeous in the way the stereotypical popular girls on TV were.  She was ‘adorable’, instead.  Petite.  She played up the image with sky blue pins in her shoulder length brown hair and a cutesy attitude. - Excerpt from Gestation 1.1
  5. Madison wore a strapless top and denim skirt, which seemed absolutely moronic to me given the fact that it was still early enough in the spring that we could see our breath in the mornings. - Excerpt from Gestation 1.1
  6. Only Madison’s mom was really petite like she was, but both her mom and dad looked really young. - Excerpt from Hive 5.4
  7. Interlude 19.z
  8. FlippinMad: You said ‘This was such a nice night and you c-words had to spoil it by being disgusting.  Come on.’

FlippinMad: and then you walked away and most of the heroes and heroines went with you or whatever.  Leaving just me and Emma and a couple of others.

    FlippinMad: They 100% went into…

FlippinMad: I don’t know what you call it.  Defense mode.  They wanted to bring things back to center.  Normalize.  They were saying things like “what’s bugging her?  We weren’t saying anything that bad”

FlippinMad: And I was sitting there being quiet and I remember thinking they were wrong.  we were kind of being bitches and we were kind of going too far when ragging on people who weren’t there. - Excerpt from Glow worm P.9
  9. I looked at the girls.  Only Madison looked really upset.  Sophia was glaring at me, and Emma managed to look bored, confident.  I didn’t like that. - Excerpt from Hive 5.4
  10. FlippinMad: what the hell was wrong with me?  I didn’t wake up to what I was doing until I got fucking caught which is just so doubly shitty.  My parents found out when we all got called to school and that was the last time I interacted with Taylor.  Moved away with Leviathan. - Excerpt from Glow worm P.9
  11. I could hear Madison tittering.  Sophia was silent, and her presence was all the more ominous for it.  I’d done something reprehensible to her.  I couldn’t recall what it was, but I knew she was here for retaliation.

They struck me, and I fell.  Emma and Madison took turns kicking me, and every effort I made to defend myself fell short.  It wasn’t just that I didn’t know how to fight, or that I was blind.  It was somehow worse, as though every effort I made were being actively punished. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.1
  12. Interlude 20.x
  13. Point_Me_@_The_Sky: I feel dumb not connecting those dots before.  Preoccupied atm and I was preoccupied then.  Fuck me.  Emma was one of them?  They kept your names out of the media

FlippinMad: Word still got out. - Excerpt from Glow worm P.9
  14. “I’ve read up on her, studied the records you have of her, talked to the students that knew her best, for better or worse.  Greg Veder, Emma Barnes, Sophia Hess, Madison Clements… her teachers, her father… I’m not so convinced.” - Excerpt from Cell 22.1
  15. FlippinMad: …and I go looking and my rock is lying there in the devastation.  Nobody’s saying what happened.  her wiki page is gone and people get annoyed or upset when I ask.  I want to know what happened when I couldn’t see.  Every non-answer I get makes it worse - Excerpt from Glow worm P.9
  16. Point_Me_@_The_Sky: Carry it.  Take it with you and use it as motivation to make things better.  We need a fucking lot of that motivation.

FlippinMad: I’m training to be a teacher

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: Then I hope 10x as much that you own this and learn from it - Excerpt from Glow worm P.9
