Andrew Hawke,[1] known in his cape identity as Vikare, was among the first heroes during the Golden Age of Parahumans.

Abilities and Powers

Vikare's powers are unknown. He was likely not a Brute, given the manner of his death. He tended to hold his abilities back to avoid scaring people.[2]

History

Andrew and his sister Grace were on board the cruise ship that first discovered Scion. Grace had cancer, and was planning to commit suicide when the trip was over;[3] Andrew also had cancer, although it was unclear if anyone knew.[4] Scion hovered near the ship and reached out, and Andrew was among the passengers who reached out to touch his hand,[4] restrained from falling by his sister.[3] Scion, who had noticed that Andrew bore a Shard from Eden, subtly reached into Andrew's body to cure his cancer and then flew away.[4] Afterward, Grace visited a doctor and discovered that she had been cured as well.[3]

At some point, Andrew developed powers and adopted the superhero identity of Vikare. He was said by the public to be the second person to develop powers after Scion, although many doubted his abilities were real.[2]

In 1989, attempting to quell a riot over a basketball game in Michigan, Vikare stepped in, only to be clubbed over the head. He died not long after of a brain embolism. Later, he would be revealed to be Andrew Hawke.[1] It was widely considered the end of the Golden Age of Parahumans.[2][3]

  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 It put me in mind of a scene from the history books and the grainy old news footage of an event from the mid-80s. Back in the day, when the superheroes could be counted on the fingers of both hands, there had been a riot over a sports match. The anger and chaos had outweighed the respect the rioters had for the hero that had stepped in. Someone had struck out with a blunt object and hit the hero. He’d died before he reached the hospital. We’d called him the second cape after Scion, but he might well have been the first, after all.

The lack of respect in particular was in play. For Vikare, it had been because so many people hadn’t truly believed the powers were real, and he had apparently held back to avoid scaring people. - Daybreak 1.1
